The value of DAN

Published on 2010-05-28 02:02:30

Three days after DAN's CEO Dan Orr came to our dive club to talk about all the nasty things that can happen while diving, our dive boat off Cabo Pulmo (Mexico BCS) was rerouted to give assistance to another boat. A diver had surfaced and although conscious reported trouble breathing and an arm he couldn't move. He was given oxygen on the boat and was later transported to the closest medical facility where he was diagnose with a mild case of DCS. He spent one treatment in the chamber of Cabo San Lucas.

Knowing that a ride to the chamber is about $2,000 (in Mexico) and the evacuation around the same, a $70 membership to DAN doesn't seem to be that bad after all. And if you're not in North America, you may have affordable universal healthcare (lucky you), but chances are that diving accident are not totally covered, so an additional insurance makes sense.
I know, it had nothing to do with photography, but remember that to be an underwater photographer you have to be a diver first. And divers dive. And shit happens.
