Digital versus film

Published on 2010-04-03 10:44:23

This one is easy, so let's get over with it pretty quick. Here're a few reasons why you should throw away your Nikonos (or send it to me for my personal museum) and embrace the modern world:
  • You can get a decent underwater camera gear for a few hundred dollars. You can probably find a good deal for a Nikonos V on ebay but before you click on that Paypal button, please read the rest

  • You can take 36 pictures at most on one dive with a film camera. You could take 1,000 pictures per dive with a digital camera. It's very important to shoot a lot when you begin, that's the only way you will improve.

  • You can't see what you shoot on a film camera. You will have to wait until your film is processed to find out how blurry you shots were. Most digital cameras allow you to review your pix underwater, zoom in on them to check the focus for example and delete if you're not happy with them. It's particularly useful when you start shooting for the first time. At the end of the day, with a laptop computer, you can review all your shots and understand what mistakes you made. Your progress will be very fast compared to film.

  • Film cameras viewfinders suck. Even a 2 inch screen lets you frame your pix the way you want.
